Sierra parametric cat bond hits $200m, prices 14% down on guidance
The second parametric U.S. earthquake catastrophe bond Sierra Ltd. (Series 2021-1), sponsored by specialist mortgage security focused investment manager Bayview Asset Management, LLC, has now been successfully upsized to $200 million, while pricing for each of the two tranches of notes has settled at the bottom end of reduced guidance. The note's two tranches will provide earthquake insurance protection across California, Oregon, South Carolina and Washington, with coverage on a parametric trigger and per-occurrence basis across a three year term.

The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) returned to the insurance-linked securities (ILS) market for its fourth catastrophe bond issuance, a currently $350 million FloodSmart Re Ltd. (Series 2021-1) two-tranche transaction, seeking additional flood reinsurance coverage from the capital market for its National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). The protection will, as with all the other FloodSmart Re catastrophe bonds, be across a three-year term and on an indemnity and per-occurrence trigger basis.

Twenty bulk annuity deals for a combined volume of £19.9B were reported among the 62 UK corporate pension schemes surveyed by Mandateware in the fourth quarter of 2020. Aviva, Just and Legal & General were responsible for the most transactions, securing three contracts each. The largest transaction recorded was the £5B longevity swap between the £31.4B Barclays Bank UK Retirement Fund and the Reinsurance Group of America. Another high-value deal was the £3.7B longevity swap that the circa £7B Prudential Staff Pension Scheme secured with Pacific Life Re. Other notable transactions included the £17.2B BBC Pension Scheme’s £3B longevity swap with Canada Life Reinsurance and Zurich; Pension Insurance Corporation’s complete buyout of the circa £2B Old British Steel Pension Scheme; and the £1.1B buy-in the circa $2.7B (£2B) Maersk Retirement Benefit Scheme secured with L&G.

Deutsche Bank Pension Scheme completes buy-in
The £4.5bn Deutsche Bank (UK) Pension Scheme has entered into a buy-in agreement with Legal & General Retirement Institutional. The £570m buy-in is the first pension risk transfer for the scheme, sponsored by a subsidiary of Deutsche Bank. It was completed in the second half of 2020 under an umbrella contract, which will allow quick completion of possible future transactions with L&G.

The cat bond will cover $575 million of the National Flood Insurance Program’s (NFIP) losses caused by named storm events, so tropical depressions, storms and hurricanes, as in the other FloodSmart cat bonds, with the protection extending across the United States, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands and D.C.

Taking into account bulk annuity deals and longevity swaps, according to Aon, the UK risk settlement market exceeded £54bn last year, topping 2019’s £52bn, despite the difficulties imposed by the pandemic. Only three bulk annuity transactions in the first half of last year exceeded £1bn, compared with 12 over the same period in 2019, according to figures previously reported by LCP.
